Mario Kart Tour is very similar to the original Mario Kart games that came out for Nintendo. The goal is the same and the mobile version has many of the same options and features as the console versions. It was announced in January of 2018 and was actually released in September of 2019. Since then, the popularity has steadily increased and the game now has millions of installs. Every 2 weeks, the game comes out with different themed tours that can be downloaded. Each tour has is a series of cups, each of which has 3 normal courses and 1 bonus course.. The tour features real cities around the world and bases the theme or design off of them.
The player or players that get the most points at the end of the tour will win the championship cup. There are 3 speed options to choose from, which are 50cc or leisurely, 100cc or fast, and 200cc or too fast. You can also get put into Frenzy mode if you get 3 of the same item from 3 different item boxes. There are a variety of items that come from these boxes and each character has some that are specialized for them. When you collect an item, you can choose to use it right away or wait until the race is almost over. These items give you an advantage and gives other players a disadvantage. After the race is done, players will get points that keep adding up until the end of the tour.
After the game completely loads, you'll be able to choose your character and customize any options before starting to play. You'll choose whether your want to play normal or multiplayer mode. If you choose the normal mode, you won't be playing with live players, but you'll still need to have an internet connection to play. Once the countdown runs out, you'll be put into the race. Different tours will have different map options and you never now which one you'll end up on. As you progress through the tour, you'll earn coins that add up until the end of that particular tour. Each new tour resets scores and points.
While the game automatically does some driving, like accelerating and jumps, but you'll still have to press the gas, let go of the gas, and steer. It'll vary from tour to tour, but you'll need to go around the track a certain number of times. Once everyone gets their laps done, points will be given based on what position each character came in. As you're racing on the track, you'll come across a few different things to either help you or hinder you, including item boxes and speed boosts. The items from these boxes will be ones that will help you get ahead and try to hinder the other players. At the end of the tour, those with the highest points win the cup.
While this may be a great option for some, others might find that it just isn't worth the time. The leveling up isn't based on player skills and advertisements are focused on getting players to make purchases. With that said, though, the graphics and sounds make for a great game. It's a little bit difficult to get used to driving and controlling the cars, but players can get some great items to use for upgrading their vehicles. If you aren't too serious and just want something to pass a little time, then Markio Kart Tour is a great app option.
